Golden Hour Canola Field Photo Session with a Farmer’s Toddler
In 2023, the Western Cape experienced its coldest and wettest winter since 1970. Consequently, the canola fields in Witsand were taller and more vibrant than ever before. For a scenic drive, hop in your car and explore the breathtaking Overberg region right now!
Canola fields are a popular choice for couple photo sessions, but we had the best canola field photoshoot with this beautiful mom and her 18-month-old daughter.
CHOICE OF SHOOT & SETTING THE TONE
A few days before the baby photo session, I visited the canola field around 10 am and noticed the flowers had a greenish fluorescent hue, which I didn’t find appealing.
On the day of the shoot our baby had a great midday nap and was well-rested, making her happy and playful during the golden hour when the yellow flowers turn a deeper and warmer shade. The late afternoon sun provided beautiful shades and contrasts.
Following my site visit, I knew exactly how to set up for the baby photo shoot and which areas to utilize. The canola was so high and dense that we couldn’t walk deep into the fields. Fortunately, my client knew the farmer, so we didn’t have to worry about trespassing.
I had the mom play with her baby during the photo session. She was squealing with delight. The baby showed me her ears, nose, and eyes, and we played a bit of peek-a-boo. The response from the client, her family, and friends when they saw the photo session images was overwhelming.
