5 Important reasons to take family photos often.

The Smit family recently reminded me of the importance of having your family photographed, and above all of you, the mom, existing in photographs together with your family.

Deleria Smit is one of those wise and determined mom’s that insist that the Smit family updates their family pictures.  Among many other things, I admire her for this. Months ahead of her 60’th birthday, she booked their photo session and instructed her family to pitch for photos and to wear her favourite colours.

Incidentally, I read the other day that when interviewed 45% of mother’s, choose family photo session as their ideal Mother’s Day gift. This is what mothers want to have.

This brings us why it is so important to take and to update family photos

To begin with, we live at a time that more than half of individuals keep their photos on their computer or phone while at the same time less than 30 percent of us are backing up our photos.

Secondly, family photos preserve our memories and tell our stories in the future. They can help us to know who we are. Our family portraits bring our family together. Everyone in one frame on your wall. Our family portraits remind our families of its love for one another. It brings us bring joy. It makes us smile. In hard times, our family portraits can bring comfort and heal.

The third reason is that family photos are a wonderful way of documenting events that happen in our lives, where we lived, seeing our family grow up and change over the years. They are part of our legacy. By letting your kids see your photos from the past and the present they become connected to their history.

In the fourth place, grandchildren and great-grandchildren may someday ask to see pictures of their family, and wouldn’t it be sad if our children had no tangible images of the family members and ancestors who came before them and helped shape the world and person they are today.

Lastly, and I think the most important reason, is that studies show that having your families’ photographs displayed prominently in your home sends the message that your family is important to one another and that you honour the memories that you created together. It’s a reminder of belonging and of being safe. It shows them how much they are loved and helps to build confidence.

So, there you got it.  You never know when the last chance for a family photo will come. Do not take time for granted. Get those portraits taken every year. Like Deleria, use special occasions. Birthdays, christenings, any celebration, or just simple gatherings when your loved ones are together and book a photo session. To conclude with, do not forget, that the all the moms and the grandmas in your family will love you even more for this.

In the Smit family the dogs are as important as the children.
