Close to home
One of my dreams was to photograph my own grandchildren’s newborn sessions. I wanted my children to have the newborn images of their babies which I do not have.
The fact that my first two grandchildren were both born in another country did not help. Simply catching a plane and being there on time was not an easy option.
We planned as best we could. At least to be there for David. Then, the little man surprised us all by showing up three weeks early! Just as our quarantine period has commenced. Furthermore, our plane tickets were purchased to meet Nina first. We have paid and booked for a house at Seaside in Florida to spend a week with Nina! This was all planned in order to reach Leesburg the day after David’s eta.
Quick detour
My generous son in law intervened and sidetracked my plans. I made a quick detour to Leesburg. Consequently, I could photograph David at 12 days old. It was perfect timing as he was a tiny little chap.
Improvising
To get studio-like images we had to improvise. We used his cot mattress and a thick down duvet in front of a smallish window. We straightened the duvet with clamps. For reflectors we taped sheets of white paper on parts of the blue walls.
Tears
Throughout the shoot I was in working mode, focusing on all the variables, trying to get the best shots. As we got close to the end, I was explaining to my baby how I wanted her to hold her baby in her arms. I told her to breathe in his smell and just focus on just how tiny he is. She started to cry, and then it sank in just how blessed we both are to have this God given moment together and just how much it meant to both of us.I hope you enjoy the images with us.
Carin…ons so so geseënd met ons kleinkinders. Jy het pragtig vasgevang met jou lens. Geniet jou tydjie saam met hulle.
Very touching story because I have the privilege of being part of this dear family. I know Maryke’s heart, her ever caring personality, her ability to capture the very best in everyone she meets. You have sown so much goodness, kindness and love in this world. May you as a family be granted with wisdom, courage and peace in the years to follow..
This is such a special story and the photos are absolutely beautiful! There is so much love in this little family and you managed to capture it perfectly.
Thank you, Judith!
